RAL Colour Guide

dunavox_hero_banner_ral_colours (1)

A wine cooler does not have to be black. Selected DUNAVOX appliances are finished in one of six signature colours or almost any shade in the RAL system, so the cabinet matches the kitchen it was designed for rather than interrupting it.

In a fitted kitchen, appliances are usually the compromise. Cabinetry is specified to an exact colour, then the appliances arrive in whatever finishes the manufacturer happens to offer. A custom RAL finish removes that compromise: the door is finished in the colour and surface you specify, so the appliance sits with the joinery instead of against it.

01

What RAL Actually Is

RAL is the colour standard the European furniture and construction industries build around. Each shade carries a unique reference — four digits in RAL Classic, seven in RAL Design System+, a hyphenated code in RAL Effect — and it refers to a physically defined colour, not a screen value.

This matters because everyone on the project works from the same reference. The joiner sprays the cabinet fronts to a RAL code, the decorator matches the wall, and the appliance is specified with the same code. Nobody is describing a colour in words, or judging it from a photograph.

Why not simply ask for “anthracite”?
Colour names are not standardised and they translate badly. Anthracite means one thing to a German kitchen manufacturer and something else to a British one. RAL 7016 means exactly one colour in every country, and that is the whole point of the system. Always quote the number and the name together, as RAL itself recommends.

02

Colours Most Often Specified for Kitchens

Start with the six DUNAVOX signature colours: they are matched against our own finish samples and are the most reliable choice. Beyond them, four directions show RAL shades consistently specified for different kitchens. Any other RAL shade can be requested with a physical colour sample — except white: RAL whites are not offered, and every white door is finished in DUNAVOX base white.

Screen colours are indicative only. Every monitor renders colour differently, and a sprayed metal surface behaves differently again from a backlit screen. Use the swatches above to narrow the conversation, then confirm the final choice against a physical sample before the order is placed.

03

The Colour Is Confirmed on a Physical Sample

No colour decision is made from a screen. DUNAVOX holds finish samples of each surface and of the six signature colours. For any other shade, a physical colour sample is sent with the order so the paint can be mixed to it.

This is the step that prevents the most expensive kind of mistake. A colour that looked correct on a laptop can read entirely differently on a sprayed door under kitchen lighting, next to a stone worktop, at the scale of a full cabinet.

From the RAL reference to the finished appliance.

See it in the room

Take the sample to the kitchen and look at it in daylight and under the installed lighting. Colours shift considerably between the two.

See it against the materials

Hold it against the worktop, the flooring and the cabinet fronts — not against a white desk.

See it at the right angle

A cabinet door is mostly seen at an angle, not straight on. Tilt the sample the way the door will actually sit.

How close is the match?
The paint is mixed in a small batch for each order, so the match is around 90% — and can be lower for shades outside the six signature colours. Where the timing allows, have the appliance finished first and match the cabinet fronts to it, rather than the other way round.

04

Matt, High Gloss or Metallic

Every custom colour order specifies two things: the RAL reference and the surface — matt, high gloss or metallic. The surface changes the character of the colour more than most people expect — the same code can read as two different shades depending on how it reflects light.

dunavox_ral_finish_samples

A practical rule
Gloss suits handleless, minimal kitchens where the appliance is meant to read as a continuous lacquered surface. Matt has low reflectivity and is always smooth — a rough or textured matt is not offered — and every RAL colour can be made in it. Metallic mixes metallic particles into the chosen colour for a glossy metallic effect: a statement finish that changes with the light. Whatever you choose, match the surface of the surrounding fronts — a gloss appliance beside matt cabinetry reads as a different colour, even at the same RAL reference.
What to expect from a painted door
What is painted: the door frame, handle, ventilation grille and hinges, in the same colour and surface. Soft-close hinges cannot be painted, and painting is carried out on the stainless-steel version of the appliance.
Details: painted handles cannot be polished afterwards, and the stainless frame beside the glass is very narrow, so small paint marks can remain at these points.
Care: clean painted surfaces with glass cleaner only.

Which Appliances Are Available in a Custom Colour

A custom RAL finish is available on 20 appliances across five collections. Each has its own custom-colour product code, marked with a C — for example DVH-44.120DC.TO is the Horizon 44 in a custom colour, and DX-194.490CK the Grande 194.

Other collections
The Noble, Prime, Sera, Balance and Home collections are produced in standard finishes only. A custom RAL finish is not available on these ranges. For a fully integrated, push-to-open appliance in a custom colour, the Horizon collection is the equivalent specification.

06

Shelf Colour

The shelf front is visible every time the door is opened, and on a glass-fronted cabinet it is visible even when it is closed. The natural beech shelves can be pickled in Mahogany, Dark walnut or Black, so the interior follows the same design idea as the exterior. These three are the only shelf colours offered, with the same lead time as the painted door.

Consider the interior lighting
Shelf colour and LED colour work together. The interior lighting can be set to white, blue or a warm tone, depending on the model, and each of those reads differently against a light or a dark shelf. If the appliance will be lit in a display setting, decide the shelf colour and the lighting colour together. See the WiFi & Smart App guide for the lighting options on each platform.

07

How a Custom Colour Order Works

1Choose the appliance. Select the model and configuration first. The colour is applied to the appliance you have already specified, so capacity, zones and installation type are decided at this stage.
2Choose the colour. One of the six signature colours, or any RAL shade except white. For other shades, a physical colour sample is sent with the order.
3Choose the surface. Matt, high gloss or metallic. This is specified separately from the colour reference and cannot be changed once production begins.
4Place the order through your retailer. The order states the model, the surface and the RAL reference. Custom finishes are ordered through an authorised DUNAVOX retailer or distributor, who will confirm availability, pricing and delivery for your market.
5Production. Painting takes around six weeks from the confirmed order, and shipping can add about a week. The appliance is delivered as a complete unit — no on-site painting is involved.
Please note: a custom-finished appliance is produced to your specification. Pricing and return conditions for custom orders differ from standard stock items and are confirmed by your retailer at the point of order.

08

The Standard Finishes

A custom colour is not always the right answer. Black glass, stainless steel and matt black are generally available with shorter lead times — confirm current stock with your retailer — and selected models accept an overlay panel so the appliance disappears behind a cabinet front entirely. Matt black is a deliberate design choice rather than a neutral default, and suits kitchens built around texture.

09

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any RAL colour be ordered?
Almost. Six signature colours are matched against DUNAVOX samples; any other RAL shade can be requested with a physical colour sample. RAL whites are not offered — white doors are finished in DUNAVOX base white. Always quote the full reference: number and name.
Which models can be ordered in a custom colour?
20 appliances across the Horizon, Spirit, Flow, Grande and Joy collections, each with its own custom-colour product code. The full list with dimensions and EAN codes is in the specification sheet.
Can I match the colour to my kitchen cabinets?
That is the purpose of the system. Ask your joiner or kitchen supplier for the RAL reference used on the cabinet fronts, and specify the same reference and surface for the appliance. Paint is mixed for each order, so where timing allows, have the appliance finished first and match the fronts to it.
Does a custom colour change the specification?
No. In the DUNAVOX catalogue, the RAL colour version of each model shares the technical specification of its other door options — capacity, cooling zones, energy consumption and noise level are the same.
What does the retailer need to prepare a quote?
The model and its custom-colour product code, the full RAL reference (number and name), the surface (matt, high gloss or metallic), the shelf colour, the door hinge side and the quantity — plus a physical colour sample for shades outside the six signature colours. The order checklist in the specification sheet collects all of it in one form.
How long does a custom colour take?
Around six weeks from the confirmed order, and shipping can add about a week. Pickled shelves have the same lead time.
How do I clean a painted door?
With glass cleaner only.
